A new re-mastered Lp reissue of Coffinworm's 2008 demo, preceding their When All Became None full length on Profound Lore. Like that album, this is pitch-black, hateful sludge metal, formed from thick slabs of rotting guitar-chug festering and crawling over a monstrous rhythm section, belting out long, grueling songs of slow-motion misery and abject hatred, with a hysteric vocalist who veers breathlessly between gouts of guttural vomit-roar and the screeching complaints of a torture victim. These guys are fucking intense, and even this early in the game were producing ultra-heavy tar-pit metal of the highest caliber. When the band steamrolls over you with the gnarled doomcrush of "High On The Reek Of Your Burning Remains" and the punk-infected vitriol of "Spitting In Infinity's Asshole", there isn't a speck of light to be found; their barbaric sludge is deadly, bestial, comparable to bands like Fistula, Unearthly Trance, and Graves At Sea with heavy doses of atavistic death metal slime soaked into their black hide, but Coffinworm distinguish themselves through their use of discordant chords and eerie tremolo melodies that crawl out of the sludge on segmented legs, a vague black metal influence that runs through the entire record. The music slows down even further on "Strip Nude For Your Killer" (always nice to see fellow fans of Andrea Bianchi's cinematic filth), which sees the 'Worm dragging into more abstract territory, the turgid downward crush breaking apart into stretches of ambient feedback and minimal amp-noise, evoking a similar blackened scumdrone sensibility as Trees. There's some "groove" on here too, but not the bloozy swamp-groove that most sludgy metal bands seem to revert to; when these guys try to rock out, it sounds like a Celtic Frost breakdown trying to scramble out of a mudhole, and is just as painfully heavy as when they are moving at their more gluey tempos. Another winner from Flenser, and highly recommended to anyone into putrescent, blackened sludge.
