CLOUDS Legendary Demo CD (Hydra Head) 13.98Clouds is a newer outfit that features Adam Mcgrath of Cave In and avant-metal masters Old Man Gloom at the helm aided by personnel from Kid Killowat, Hope Conspiracy, and Permanent Island. This debut release from the band actually appears right on the heels of an announcement at the end of 2006 of an indefinite hiatus for Cave In. I kept hearing descriptors like ""action rock"" being bandied about in preliminary reports on the Clouds sound, and while I wasn't expecting any sort of Cave In cloning going on here, I was certainly surprised by how unapologetically boogie these jams are. Legendary Demo (brassy title, that) is one of the brawniest fuzz rawk collections to appear since the mid 90's heyday of the now defunct Mans Ruin label, although charged up with a healthy amount of modern heaviness and noisy experimentation. Clouds churn out some pretty massive blooze-choogle fests in the form of 'New Amnesia', 'Pressure', and 'Party Grunge', where retro 70's dirt rock power and gnarly hooks a la Fu Manchu and Mudhoney are reconfigured as supercharged explosions of acid punk; elsewhere, the band exorcises some crazed 80's hardcore demons with the Void-esque 'Magic Hater' before that track morphs into another doped up boogie metal churner, and the album's final track 'Quartulli Dub' is just over 19 minutes of, what else, awesome spacey dub freakout and blazed sax blowing la the Stooges 'LA Blues' fused with Scream. Powerful, heavy, and most importantly pretty damn catchy, this will no doubt surprise longtime followers of Hydra Head's output, who aside from Scissorfight and Goatsnake, isn't really known for it's forays into this sort of saurian rock. Comes in a cool full color six-panel digipack.
