COFFINS  Ancient Torture  2 x CD   (Deepsend)   17.98

Back in stock! Japanese death metallers Coffins have risen to the top of the international death metal scene, and rightfully so. Their simple, brutally effective brand of primitive death metal has produced some of the catchiest old school deathsludge of recent times, and through their frequent international touring and steady onslaught of releases has created a fanatical cult following, which has most recently resulted in the band being picked up by Relapse. The trio's mix of punishing sludgy death metal, devastating riffs that are delivered with a stripped down, almost punk-like simplicity reminiscent of early Frost/Hellhammer, and ultra heavy attack that often slips into seriously slow pulverizing doom has made 'em one of my favorite modern death metal bands, but it's been tough keeping up with all of the stuff that they've released over the years, since many of their 7"s were put out in extremely small editions that sold out quickly. Deepsend has stepped in to amend this concern for hardcore Coffins fans by releasing this massive nearly two-hour compendium of vinyl, Ep and compilation tracks titled Ancient Torture. This double disc set collects just about all of the Coffins tracks that have appeared on splits and compilations over the past couple of years, with twenty-one tracks total that include the tracks taken from the split 10" with Mala Suerte, the split 7"s with Lobotomized, Skullhog, Cianide, Spun In Darkness, the Warhead 7", the split Cds with XXX Maniak and The Arm And Sword Of A Bastard God, the Pharmacopoeia 7" boxset, the split LP with Otesanek, and the tracks from the 3-way split CD with Anatomia and Grudge. A chunk of these releases (though not all) have gone out of print, making this a convenient collection of virtually all of Coffins's non-album material, including a bunch of covers of songs from Venom, Cathedral, Goatlord, Carnage, Pungent Stench and Asphyx that Coffins render in their own distinct style of mangy, sludgy death metal barbarism. The set is enhanced with fantastic grisly artwork from Mark Riddick, cover art for each of the featured releases, and detailed track notes, and packaged in an eight-panel digipack. Obviously, if you love Coffins and missed out on the original releases, this is pretty crucial.
