FOISY, ANDRE  Theory Of Progress  3" CDR   (Small Doses)   6.99
Theory Of Progress IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE FOR ORDER

Another fantastic offering from Andre Foisy that follows his After The Prophecy cassette on Land Of Decay from earlier in the year; we've really been digging the dark, ethereal ambience and minimal driftscapes that this member of Chicago black-kosimiche-psychonauts Locrian has been releasing under his own name, and this extremely limited 3" disc on Small Doses is more high quality guitar/synth based shadow-bliss that flits at the edges of both sparse dark electronic music and ashen guitar psychedelia.

"Theory Of Progress" is a single twenty-one minute track that at first appears with murky synth tones melting over what sounds like a distant didgeridoo buzzing and growling far below in some vast chasm in the earth cloaked in blackness. Little by little, electric piano begins to creep in; the soft somber sound of what might be a Rhodes piano drifting low over the slow drag of humming guitar strings that are delayed into oblivion. The guitars get closer to the foreground as we get deeper into the track, sending off silvery tracers of guitar notes spinning off into blackness, and eventually forming into a slow whirling minor key melody that repeats over and over as the music drifts deeper into cosmic territory, joined by slow chiming sounds and thick washes of synthesizer drone. An ominous low thrum continues to thread throughout the track, and the second half gets heavier, heavy gusts of low end guitar sludginess oozing beneath the muted, muffled keyboards, everything gradually becoming louder and more intense, finally blowing out into a vortex of guitar fuzz and electrical hum.

We could listen to Foisy's slow motion dark electronic ambience all night long. The sounds on Theory would have fit right in on some 70's horror movie soundtrack, but also reminds us of the darker, more stygian realms of 70's space music that we love so much. A stunning piece of work, packaged in an eight-page mini-booklet with full color photos by Kelly Rix of pylons that tower over the landscape like huge mystical structures. Limited edition of seventy-eight copies.
