EGYPT  self-titled  CD   (Meteor City)   11.98
self-titled IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE FOR ORDER

Egypt were a band from Fargo, North Dakota who were only around long enough to record this four song album before calling it quits, but the solid, fuzz-encrusted riffs and drugged grooves on this disc have generated a serious cult following over the years. Released on vinyl by Lyderhorn in 2007 and only now seeing a cd release, Egypt's self-titled album is a terrific slab of doom-laden stoner sludge that anyone into slow n' low riffery and spacey drugdoom are going to love. Slow, grooving psych-doom jams that lumber through bass-heavy riffs, the guitar sound distorted and heavy on the fuzz, backed by a drummer who lays on the heavy pounding backbeat, lots of druggy stoned wah guitar and lugubrious desert rock ambience, the vocals sung in a killer emotional shout that gets pretty spacey and doused in echo as the band delves deeper into their psychedelic blues-doom. The massive distorted bass is sometimes infused with a strange phased effect, and the slow stomping dirges often erupt into fuzzed-out rock, taking this into spacey territory at times. Think Kyuss AND Sleep, equal doses of each making up Egypt's thick, laid-back heaviness.

More than anything, it's the bluesy proto-doom of bands like Warpig and Pentagram and, of course, Black Sabbath that form the basis of Egypt's sound, even a little Deep Purple in the groovy rocker "Dirty Witch", and fans of that classic slow-mo metal sound will no doubt LOVE these guys. Not too many bands are able to capture that sound as authentic as Egypt does, and that's undoubtedly why there's been a cult following growing around this band over the past few years. Meterocity recommends this for fans of bands like Deep Purple, Sir Lord Baltimore, Cactus, Grand Funk Railroad, Dozer, Lowrider, Sheavy, and Hawkwind, and they'll definitely dig this, but any of you guys into the more psychedelic side of doom metal and the Maryland blues-doom bands like Internal Void, Revelation and Unorthodox should check this out too. Comes in a gatefold black and white jacket with the same cool minimal cover art as the original LP, opening up to reveal full color psychedelic tableaux on the inside.
