GINNUNGAGAP Return To Nothing LP (Misanthropic Agenda) 24.98Before KTL and all of the myriad other bands and side projects that Stephen O'Malley has formed over the past few years, there was Ginnunggagap, a short lived collaborative group that took it's name from an abyss in Norse mythology and which took a couple of different forms lineup-wise, with O'Malley always at the center. Return To Nothing came out as a super-limited cd several years ago and quickly went out of print, but the recording has been reissued (and remixed and presented in a substantially different form) with this new LP that came out earlier this year ('09) on Misanthropic Agenda, released on swirled yellow vinyl in a collector's edition of five hundred copies. The record documents two separate pieces that were performed in New York City in early 2004 with the lineup of O'Malley on guitar, Gerritt Wittmer (Deathroes) on computer, and Tim Wyskida (Khanate/Blind Idiot God) on gongs and tympani, and the musicians slowly carve out a huge swath of atmospheric instrumental dread across each side, with soft swells of cavernous rumble and shimmering percussion beneath O'Malley's droning, menacing arpeggios and improv guitar. It's a creepy set, mixing together eerie strummed chords and super abstract Fushitsusha-like strings scraped and bent into strange atonal blues mutations, surrounded by shapeless ambient drift and almost ritualistic percussive washes that coil into a dreamlike realm of sound that gets downright kosmiche on the second side.
The record comes in a cardstock cover printed in gold inks.
