FOOD  self-titled  LP   (Molsook)   11.98

Richmond keeps heaving up these awesome sludge rock bands at us - lately I've been spinning the new Hex Machine album on a regular basis, and now we've got a new slab of downtuned skullcrush from Molsook, the label that first introduced us to Hex Machine and other RVA ragers like Tigershark. I dont know much about Food, other than that the band rarely records and features members of punk bands like Pink Razors, Stop It, and Churl, but these guys share that same sludgy mangled vibe as the rest of the Richmond area noise rock bands I dig, delivering a super heavy brand of syrupy post-punk infused heaviness across these five tracks. Crushing and mostly midpaced, Food craft huge riffs from super distorted chunky guitars that move from crawling sludge to faster, more rocking tempos, building them on top of pounding muscular drumming and locking into some killer angular grooves. Thick streaks of mangy feedback are strewn everywhere, and the band has a knack for breaking off into quiter math-rock parts that contast nicely with the heavier side of the band. There are also a couple of spots where huge Sabbathy riffs emerge out of the more convoluted parts. A mighty mix of dirgey heaviness and mathy complexity and raging metallic noise rock, with infrequent vocals that let the riffs do most of the talking, but when they do kick in, they're an awesome bratty yowl that works perfectly with Food's churning angular sludge. Packaged in a great looking full color jacket, includes a heavy insert, and pressed on thick 180 gram vinyl.
