CRAZY RIVER & BJERGA, SINDRE Black Stained Songs From Silver Spines CDR (Carbon) 7.00Taken from their live performance at the Oslo arts venue Sound of Mu in early 2008, Black Stained Songs From Silver Spines is another lengthy free-drone jam from the duo of Sindre Bjerga and Crazy River, who have been collaborating on live amp-rituals for a couple of years now. Like their previous cd-r releases, this is a thick, formless cloud of improvised guitar noise and feedback that begins as an amorphous mass of bleating feedback and lower, heavier amp tones, then slowly and gradually builds into a heavier dronescape filled with splattery cymbals and metallic percussive noises, thick streaks of dark distorted drone, static feedback, and huge smeared powerchords buried beneath the sprawling feedback and amp rumble. At times the sound is punctuated by blasts of ultra-heavy guitar that border on Sunn-style ambient doom, but these never last for long, always eventually sliding back beneath the waves of psychedelic throb that Per Gisle Galen creates with his guitar, the bursts of distorted crush swarmed by the eerie tones of a theremin wavering through the murk, and the scraping heavy textures created by Bjerga's amplified contact mics and tapes. The piece stretches out for almost twenty-five minutes, a massive slab of improvised free-drone sludginess, super heavy and hypnotic. The disc is packaged in a 5" x 7" chipboard mailer-style jacket that is printed with abstract silkscreened artwork.
