DEATH OF HER MONEY, THE  Spirit Of The Stairwell  CD   (Super-Fi)   11.98

Not ones to squander a good solid heavy riff, this Welsh trio have already figured out that one of the most surefire ways to nirvana is through merciless repetition, via taking a skullcrushing riff and turning it into a mantra, a pulverizing uber-om played over and over and inducing a trance-like state through sheer force. The Death Of Her Money, in spite of their weird name and hideous album cover, are one of the biggest surprises on this weeks new arrivals list. The album came out last year on the UK label Super Fi but I'm just now getting around to listing this at Crucial Blast, and it's one of those albums that I think has slipped below everyones radar due to the fact that newer British bands dont get as much attention as they should on this side of the pond, and also because I suspect that people might mistake these guys for another Neurosis clone, which they definitely aren't. The sound of The Death Of Her Money is actually pretty eclectic, takings elements of early Mosquito Control era Isis, lush shoegazer guitar textures that you could mistake for coming off of a Creation Records album, creative chords and dissonant guitar sounds that sometimes have a Sonic Youth feel, massive pneumatic drums that pound and throb with a relentless machinelike precision, and eerie math rock passages. Like fellow Brits Hey Colossus, I'm pretty sure that these guys have been listening to their share of krautrock and related forms, because almost every track on this disc is built on a foundation of pounding, cyclical, almost motorik (if they weren't so fucking heavy) drumming. This album is pretty awesome, and should definitely be checked out by anyone into sludgy, hypnotic heaviness. Just imagine a cross between early Isis and Gore, or Melvins being backed by Can's drummer, and making frequent detours into moody Slint-esque math rock. Monolithic and percussive and so, so groovy, these guys bulldoze through an hour of awesome metallic hypno-sludge that comes highly recommended.
