COALESCE  There Is Nothing New Under The Sun  CD   (Hydra Head)   14.98

We all know that Coalesce were one of the heaviest, most crushing bands that came out of the metallic hardcore scene in the 90's, a band that influenced legions of super heavy, complex metal and hardcore bands, but some of you newer Coalesce fans might not realize that these guys were HUGE fans of classic rock, and Led Zeppelin in particular. Take a listen to the riffs on albums like 012:Revolution in Just Listening, and you'll hear some massive hard rock riffage lodged in the bludgeoning, complex arrangements. Coalesce sure weren't shy about how much they loved Led Zeppelin, and their fandom reached it's apex when the guys released There Is Nothing New Under The Sun in 1999. The EP was a collection of Zep covers that are played surprisingly straight, everything from "Immigrant Song" and "Heartbreaker" to "Black Dog", "Whole Lotta Love" and "That's The Way" getting the Coalesce treatment, becoming souped-up, skullcrushing mutations of the originals, pummeling you into the dirt with these instantly recognizeable but impossibly heavy songs. The original release went out of print for awhile, but Hydra Head reissued it last year with the vocal tracks completely re-recorded (and sounding even fiercer than ever), and with a bunch of additional rare and unreleased material added on. The reissue includes their cover of Black Sabbath's "Supernaut", the Boy Sets Fire cover songs from the split EP, and covers of Undertown and Get Up Kids, and some newer acoustic renditions of Led Zep tunes. And the packaging is amazing, the disc presented in an eye-popping gatefold with a diecut interior and a printed inner wallet, sporting some killer psychedelic artwork from Aaron Turner.
