FROSTMOON ECLIPSE  The Legacy  CD   (God Is Myth)   9.98

The early phase of Frostmoon Eclipse's progressive deathtrip is excavated and explored on this new disc that God Is Myth put out earlier this year...if yer familiar with God Is Myth but haven't heard this Italian black metal outfit yet, then you probably won't be surprised to find that the band plays a somewhat ornate and folk-colored form of modern black metal. Frostmoon Eclipse are undeniably black metal though, first and foremost, playing bleak, epic BM that draws heavily from the icy Norwegian tradition, with blazing buzzsaw guitars, triumphant frostbitten riffs, blackened shreiking vocals, all soaring on loping midtempo grooves or outbursts of blastbeat drumming. Think Emperor, later Mayhem, Enslaved, but inject their own unique x-factor with an almost constant layer of acoustic guitars over the blackened metal, and move from the massive thrashing riffage and blastbeat drumming into passages of super catchy indie jangle and dark, moody rock. These sudden turns into melodic hooks, haunting flamenco-esque melodies and jangly guitars can be abrupt, but they sound killer, reminiscent of Opeth a little, but darker, and much more rock, like a supremely blackened post-punk/goth band. Pretty great! This disc is a collection of older songs that were released on various limited edition EP's, and includes Frostmoon Eclipse's Life Is Fading Away disc from 2004, the Revenge In Scorn EP, the 1999 disc Supreme Triumph In Black, as well as covers of Cathedral's "Imprisoned In Flesh" and Tiamat's "Cold Seed" and four live tracks recorded in Italy in 2008 that appear here for the first time. The cool package for The Legacy consists of a plastic DVD case with outer artwork that resembles an old, weathered book cover, and includes an insert sheet and a vinyl Frostmoon Eclipse sticker; the whole shebang is limited to 500 copies.
