DAY EVERYTHING BECAME NOTHING, THE  Brutal  CD   (No Escape)   13.98

No Escape makes it hard to reconcile their visual aesthetic with the sounds they release through their label...while most underground gore grind pushers continue to present their music in increasingly more and more disgusting artwork that depicts exploding assholes, stock photography stolen from rotten.com, morbidly obese people wallowing in their own filth and other ridiculously distasteful scenes of depravity and violence, here you've got a label that presents a band like Aussie grinders The Day Everything Became Nothing with a package that boasts a graphic design job that I would actually describe as "elegant". From the outside, the packaging for this disc is almost all white, aiming for minimalism with the simple one-color cover and the back of the case listing the ten untitled tracks on Brutal by numeral...Jesus, it almost looks like a Tzadik release. The booklet opens up into a huge twelve-panel spread with the liner notes and epic thanks lists on one side, and the interior completely comprised of a photo spread that shows the members of TDEBN lounging in the "TDEBN offices", surrounded by bling, stacks of cash and a sports car. Very stylish looking. All of this, of course, is juxtaposed with the simple, skullcrushing brutality of TDEBN's rocked-out goregrind, which gets more and more refined with every new album. I've been raving about these guys since their first album, and they continue to deliver ultra-groovy, ultra-crushing grind with some of the most absurdly pitchshifted vocals ever. Imagine Carcass' most rocking stuff if it was tuned even lower and stripped off all of the technical soloing, armed with even catchier groovy hooks and reduced to a barbaric, sludgy goregrind/sludge/rock assault, with snotty, high pitched snarls trading off with gurgling noises that sound like a grizzly bear growling into a FX processor. These guys are the AC/DC of goregrind if ever there was one.
