COMETS ON FIRE self-titled CD (Alternative Tentacles) 12.98Finally back in stock, here's the CD reissue of Comets On Fire's awesome debut album from 2001; the album had originally been released only on LP, but Alternative Tentacles reissued it a few years ago. In addition to the original album, this disc also has six live tracks that were recorded in 2000, and the live stuff is a goddamn earshredding blast of low-fi psych stomp. Since signing to Sub Pop, Comets On Fire have put out a couple of cool albums with Avatar and Blue Cathedral, both of which took their earlier psych rock excesses and added more melody and mellowness, making their sound more laid back and even brought in some folksy prettiness. Cool stuff for sure, but my favorite Comets album continues to be the raging, balls-out assault of noise, fx and speed that Comets concocted on the self-titled debut, and it's without a doubt the heaviest album the band has ever released. Freaked out and ULTRA DISTORTED speedball explosions of psychedelic garage punk, like a terminally tripping cross between the bluesy proto-metal of Blue Cheer, the blistering freeform psych of Japanese distorto-acid-gods High Rise, and Monster Magnet in a full-blown LSD wigout. Holy shit. This hypercharged psych crush is pushed over the edge with an almost constant onslaught of wild electronic FX and Echoplex oscillations and distorted in-the-red vocals. Essential for fans of heavy as hell, crazed psych rock/space rock.
