EYELESS IN GAZA  Bitter Apples  CD   (Hand/Eye)   13.98

Tim from Hand/Eye has resurrected this excellent 1995 full length from UK psychedelic, avant-pop/folk duo Eyeless In Gaza. Moving away from the spontaneous and improvised music of earlier releases, these 16 songs draw from English avant-folk, strummy post-punk/indie pop, traditional European music, and spurts of electronic noise and hissing drones. Much of Bitter Apples seesaws between jangly psyche pop reminiscent of Robyn Hitchcock (minus the whimsy) and dark, Wicker Man -esque pagan "wyrd"-folk, buffeted by experimental arrangements and tastefully employed electronics, and filtered through the dark melancholy post-punk of Joy Division and the 4AD "sound". The songs are largely driven by the beautiful, shimmering layered guitars, drenched in reverb, courtesy of Martyn Bates , and also features his wonderfully resonant and and emotive vocals. An excellent art-pop album thats incredibly accessible while giving us the uniquely surreal and bent quality that has defined Eyeless In Gaza over the past few decades of their existence. Highly recommended!
