FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, THE  Gods Of Chaos  CD   (Skin Graft)   14.98

Yet another crucial Luttenbachers album that we finally now have in stock, Gods Of Chaos from 1997 is from what is in my opinion the most "brutal" phase of the Luttenbachers timeline. Man, in the late 90's, these guys were totally wasting my skull with their vicious fusion of no-wave skronk and hyperfast black/grind/thrash metal, and this album is one of their most insane. It's a concept album about the annhilation of humanity, told through six lengthy instrumental pieces that fuse together dissonant blasts of blackened amorphous thrashing, extended abstract soundscapes, minimalism and fucked-up, jazz/no wave influenced skronk. Terror begins with "Pointed Stick Variations" as a drunken emcee heralds the oncoming of the Luttenbachers as he struggles to get their name right, and is subsequently obliterated by a horrendous explosion of deformed guitar noise that writhes for a good six minutes and sounds almost exactly like fucking Abruptum, but later morphs into a plodding noise rock jam splattered with gobs of toxic clarinet bleating. The rest of the album descends deeper into insanity, and moves from churning cauldrons of screeching jazz reeds and death metal double bass blasting, to expanses of electronic chirping and dense, crushing noise, loosely structured fields of percussion and guitar/bass noise, skittery free jazz, mutant surf-riff runs, blazing prog-damaged grindcore with impossibly intricate structures and Weasel's awesome hyperspeed blastbeats, bizarre pig-squeal loops and freaked out Zappa-esque sections, tortured moans and screams floating across the background, thrashing space/prog/jazz, and clusterfucks of convoluted guitar lines, spastic drumming, shrieking saxophones. It all comes to a close with "The Sun Is Bleeding", which is almost melodic when heard after the carnage of the preceding tracks, a twelve minute skronk climax that perfectly wraps it all up.

Gotta note, I love the crazy insert foldout that comes with Gods Of Chaos, which reads like a maniac's manifesto to the jazz/death/no wave blast violence that the Luttenbachers were invoking...at the bottom of the insert, it reads "Death Metal Is Free Jazz - Thanks to Vorak, Necromantia, Anal Cunt, Abruptum, And Ourselves For Proving This Obvious Fucking Point." Right on. Another crucial piece of the Luttenbachers saga.
