DALEK  Deadverse Massive Vol. 1: Dalek Rarities 1999-2006  CD   (Hydra Head)   14.98

One of the very few hip hop ensembles that warrant inclusion in the C-Blast store, Dalek stands in stark opposition to the fame-driven hype of

commercial hip-hip, and has been crafting dark, brooding, terminally heavy hip-hop since the 90's when they first appeared on the legendary

indie/hardcore label Gern Blandsten. This newest collection appears on Hydra Head, which might surprise anyone unfamiliar with Dalek, but

really, their music has just as much in common with the ambient drone scene, post industrial heaviness, and psychedelia as it does with

underground hip-hop...just look to their collaborations with Godflesh's Justin Broadrick and legendary krautrockers Faust for proof.

Deadverse Massive Vol. 1 is a killer compilation that collects a ton of hard to find, rare Dalek jams, remixes, and some unreleased

stuff, including Dalek's tracks from the split 12" with Justin Broadrick's Techno Animal, Kid606, and Velma, remixes from Enon, and the

Streets All Amped 12" on Ad Noiseam. And this sounds less like a compilation of odds and ends and more like an actual album, going

from grim, dark rhythm-driven instrumentals to apocalyptic lyrical flow over crushing, industrial-strength beats and sinister textured

dronescapes that are as deep and immersive as anything from Troum. An excellent starting point for anyone looking to engage the dark

noise-driven genius of Dalek, and Dalek fans who missed out on the original vinyl releases and are gonna need these unreleased jams. Comes in a

slick 8-panel digipack.
