EL CHUPA COBRAS self titled CD (Acerbic Noise Development) 11.98Acerbic continues to kill with their newest batch of releases. We've got the gnarly noise-rock/sludge metal of the debut album from The Devil And The Sea, an awesome second album of melodic, super catchy indie sludge from Ganon, and this ripper from noise rockers El Chupa Cobras. A hyperactive blast of mathy, skronky spazz rock from Montgomery, Alabama that has Acerbic label bozz Chad Baker on drums, and he and his crew whip up a manic debut album that taps into the spirit of the Midwest noise rock scene of the '90s. Taking cues from bands like Craw, Jesus Lizard, Dazzling Killmen, and Shellac, El Chupa lunges through eleven songs of distorted stop/start metallic riffing, furiously shredded shouting, pummeling and punishing jazz-inflected drumming, odd time signatures, and frantic shredding leads and noodly fretboard runs that are all channeled into short rocking blasts of energy. The nervous, twitchy delivery reminds me alot of the prog-punk of The Wayward, with whom I'm betting they share a similiar set of influences. There are some heavier, slower sludge metal moments, as well as a long feedback noise jam that shows up in the album's longest song, the closer "Chocolate Mask", and as a fanatic for all things noise-rock, I'm really digging this first album from the Cobras...an amped up n' chaotic stonerpunk version of the Dazzling Killmen!
